Advanced retrofit training developed to provide:
A simple two stage process provides flexibility:
Stage 1 – A whole year in which to complete the AECB online, self-directed course, including the option to attend live online ‘Retrofit cafes’
Stage 2 – Live tutoring and assessments via Synergy Training Centre, arranged with you to help fit around your schedule
Partial funding is now available for those who reside in, or complete the majority of their work in, England.
The partially funded programme will be open to both those who are new to the AECB and our training, and our current course students and graduates.

This year-round e-learning course is aimed at professionals in the construction industry; built environment and those involved in the energy efficiency sector who would like to understand how the PAS 2035 framework could add robustness to their projects and those who would like to become an accredited Retrofit Coordinator.
The course provides the in-depth technical detail essential to understanding low carbon retrofit and a working knowledge of the PAS 2035 process and framework. The course enables students to become confident and proficient in retrofit coordination in order to help deliver PAS 2035 compliant projects.
The Level 5 Diploma qualification is aimed at those already familiar with retrofit and project management.
This route uses ABBE awarding body, and as such candidates will need to meet the entry requirements for ABBE’s Level 5 Diploma in Retrofit Coordination and Risk Assessment qualification.

If you don’t currently want to become proficient in understanding the Retrofit Coordinator role, you can choose to join our Government recognised AECB CarbonLite™ Retrofit Foundation course to learn holistically about the retrofit process including how to develop your understanding of heat, ventilation and moisture in existing buildings, awareness of the issues that can arise from repair and and how to make informed decisions, and gain knowledge in how to reduce the performance gap.
This route to achieve the Level 5 Diploma qualification involves two stages.
The first stage of the programme is to complete the AECB CarbonLite™ Retrofit Coordination course (CLRc).
The content in our AECB CarbonLite™ Retrofit Coordination is attuned to deep low energy retrofit, carbon costing, and promotes the use of the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) with a focus on reducing the performance gap and introducing AECB stock modelling.

Following completion of our course, students will move on to a separate assessment stage with Synergy Training Centre who will supplement what students have learned on our course with the Level 5 assessments, top up tutoring and certification elements. (please see the ‘Course Approach’ section for more details about stage 2)
If you are not already a member of the AECB, you will first need to join the AECB, you can choose your appropriate membership level, and you can then apply to the programme.
This route to achieve the Level 5 Diploma qualification involves two stages.
Stage 1 is the online AECB CarbonLite Retrofit Coordinator course takes on average 105 hours of fully online, self-directed learning.
Stage 2 is a separate assessment stage that follows on from completion of our CLR Coordination course with the independent centre, called Synergy Training Centre, and ABBE awarding body.

Synergy Training Centre will keep track of your progress on our course and will contact you to arrange your participation in this assessment stage following completion of our course.
It is recommended to progress to the assessment stage within the first three months of completing stage 1, and Synergy Training Centre will assist you to complete your qualification within this timeframe if possible. However, Stage 2 must be taken within a year of completing Stage 1.

PAS 2035 was sponsored by the UK Government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). This is the key document in a framework of new and existing standards on how to conduct effective energy retrofits of existing buildings, it covers how to access dwellings for retrofit, identify improvement options, design and specify Energy Efficiency Measures (EEM) and monitor retrofit projects.
The standard drives the ‘whole house approach’ including the ‘fabric first’ methodology. It defines the qualifications and responsibilities of individual retrofit roles and respective activities required prior to and post EEM installation. It includes a risk assessment process that builds incrementally robust requirements depending on what measures and type of building that the retrofit project is assessed to fall within.
The PAS 2035 framework needs to be followed to draw down specific government funding for retrofit projects. It stipulates that Retrofit Coordinators need to register with TrustMark to be able to Coordinate such funded projects. The management of the project must be compliant with the PAS 2035 and its requirements.
PAS 2035 is inextricably linked to PAS 2030 (for installers), which is the standard to which all energy efficiency installers must be certified and compliant.
The current Technical Author for the 2023 update of the PAS 2035 document is Dr Sarah Price. Sarah is also one of the writers of our Retrofit Coordinator course.
